Inspired by Martha's Tam in Doctor Who: Human Nature

Top: With Larger Hook
Rnd 1: Make a Magic Adjustable Ring. Ch 1, 12 sc in MAL. Draw MAR loop closed tightly. Join to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc. (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times. Sc in next sc. (18) Join.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc. (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times. Sc in next 2 sc. (24) Join.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc. (sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times. Sc in next 3 sc. (30) Join.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc. (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times. Sc in next 4 sc. (36) Join.
Rnds 6-21: Continue increasing in a similar manner, adding 1 sc to the number between increases. At the end of Rnd 21, you should have 132 sc.
Rnd 22: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc. (sc in next 21 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times. Sc in next 21 sc. (138) Join in BL of 1st sc.
Rnd 23: Switch to smaller hook and work in BLO for this round. Ch 1, sc2tog, (sc in next 21 sc, sc2tog) 5 times. Sc in last 21 sc. Join in both loops to first sc.
Rnds 24-25: Ch 1, sc in ea sc around. Join.
Rnd 26: Ch 1, sc2tog, (sc in next 20 sc, sc2tog) 5 times. Sc in last 20 sc. Join.
Rnd 27: Sl st in next sc, ch 1, (sc in next 18 sc, sc3tog) around. Join to first sc.
Rnd 28: Sl st in next sc, ch 1, (sc in next 16 sc, sc3tog) around. Join.
Rnds 29-30: Ch 1, sc in ea sc. At end of Rnd 30, join to FL of 1st sc.

Beg Band: Rnd 1: Working in FLO, Ch 1, (sc2tog, sc in next 6 sc) 12 times. Sc2tog, sc in last 4 sc. Join in both loops.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in ea sc. Join.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, (sc2tog, sc in next 6 sc) 10 times. Sc2tog, sc in last 5 sc. Join.
Rnds 4-8: Ch 1, sc in ea sc. Join. At end of Rnd 8, fasten off.

Trim: With smaller hook and top of Tam facing you, join yarn with a sl st to 1st unused loop from Rnd 22. Work 1 row rsc. Join to first rsc, fasten off.

Pompon: Wrap yarn around the short side of a 4"x6" or 3"x5" note card about 100 times. Slide yarn off card and tie tightly around center of yarn, leaving long ends for attaching to Tam. Cut all loops. Fluff. Trim if desired (I left mine "mussy"). Attach to center of Tam Top using long ends. Weave in all ends.

Notes:
This tam was inspired by the tam worn by Freema Agyeman in Doctor Who: Human Nature. It is worked in one piece in joined rounds.
