Spider Web Skirt
Filing: Uncategorized — CatsCradleCreations @ 10:56 am

If you remember, I tried to start a CAL for Josi Hannon Madera’s Spider Web Skirt two years ago when the pattern was still offered for sale on Weird Mirror, her former web site. I have recently been informed that the Spider Web Skirt pattern is now offered for FREE at Craftzine.com for those who are interested in the pattern.

Also, be sure to check out Art of Crochet, Josi’s new site, for awesome patterns and video tutorials!

Piano
Filing: Uncategorized — CatsCradleCreations @ 12:37 pm

So, I had the piano tuned yesterday. To find out how to service it, the tuner had to first ascertain the piano’s age.

I found out the following about my piano:

 • It was built in 1905
 • The strings and tuning pins are original to the piano
 • It has a tack bar that makes it sound like a harpsichord when you hold the two middle pedals down
 • There was a mouse nest in my piano
 • The keys all click because of the mouse’s taking all the felts from them to build its nest
 • The keys caps are ivory!
 • I was given tips on how to clean and refinish my instrument
 • She weighs about a ton and should have a support jack under each side in the basement
 • Her soundboard will have to be removed for shop work, but it can wait until I have the money to do so. I can live with the clicks for now
 • She’s only worth about $200, but to me she’s priceless because she plays well and has a rich tone
 • She plays about a half step flat and had to be tuned to herself because of the age of her strings. We didn’t want to force a “proper” tuning and risk popping the strings.
 • She hasn’t been tuned in at least 20 years
 • The bench is probably worth more than the piano–it has eagle claw legs!

I’m just glad to have the piano sounding better. It was difficult to enjoy playing when the notes would make sour chords and grate against each other. I’m teaching the kids to play, and Delbert is really excited to learn to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I only hope he keeps his enthusiasm as we get into more difficult exercises and pieces.

Now, it’s time to go shopping for piano books: techniques, exercises, classical pieces, and beginner books for the kids.

I’ve been asked to play piano for church, so I also need to pick up the music binder and practice those songs. I think I’m going to have to give up my flute because I have problems with my left jaw popping painfully every morning when I get up. (I have to postpone breakfast for at least half an hour until my jaw stops popping and I can open my mouth without hurting.) Well, if I have to give up one instrument, it’s not going to stop me from refreshing my piano skills!!

Honey (Let’s) Do List
Filing: Uncategorized — CatsCradleCreations @ 9:26 pm

Admit it. We all have a “Honey Do List” hanging around somewhere. It doesn’t have to even be on paper. Mine is really more of a “Honey, Let’s Do” list as I like to get my hands in the dirty work.

This is a bit of a follow-up post from the house update I posted yesterday. I mentioned that we have a couple of projects that we’re working on, and that we have a few more on queue. Well, I’m proud to say that one of those has been taken care of as of today. Below is a short version of what still needs to be done:
To Do List

 • Cassie’s vet appt (Wed. 7/25)
 • Delbert’s dentist appt (Fri. 8/3)
 • Nieces’ parties (Sat/Sun 8/4-5)
 • Shopping for nieces’ parties
 • Shop for remodeling supplies such as lumber, varnish, gypsum board, saw, varnish brushes
 • Frame doorways
 • Hang drywall
 • Place trim around doorways and stain
 • Make, stain, and hang doors
 • Sketch new kitchen plan
 • Tear out current kitchen
 • Shop for kitchen supplies such as cabinet and counter top books, lumber and plywood for cabinets, cement mixer, framing supplies for counters, double basin sink, door for Cassie’s crate, cement mix, dyes, dishwasher
 • Build cabinets, install dishwasher and make frame for cement counter tops
 • Make counter tops and install sink
 • Install counter tops

Done

 • Get piano tuned
 • Make new washcloths for the bathroom (2 done, 1 on needles)

So, what’s on your Honey Do or Honey Let’s Do list?

House Update
Filing: Uncategorized — CatsCradleCreations @ 12:21 am

We’ve been remodeling our house for the last few weeks (not counting the two we were out of town) and we have finally gotten to a point where we can see some real progress.

We started taking down wallpaper the first night and that ended up going on for a couple of weeks. Since it didn’t get done as quickly as we had wanted, Del went ahead and started demolition. We had planned at first to just add a door to an existing closet.

Now, we’ve knocked out all the plaster on one wall in the older boys’ room, knocked out a door in our room to access the bathroom, and knocked out a wall in Delbert’s room to add a closet. We also knocked out part of the wall of the existing closet for a game room and parts of two walls to add storage. Let’s just say the upstairs of our house is about 2 tons lighter from all the plaster we took down.

The next thing we have to do is frame the doors for the closets and the opening for the game room. We’re planning on doing an exposed beam and post look, and we’re planning on leaving two sides of the chimney exposed upstairs. We’re adding lighting that will be easy to construct puzzles by and also good for reading. We’re adding storage above the stairs, but it will also help with heating as it will eliminate the current high ceiling.

After all the framing is done, we’ll be installing gypsum board where we need walls. While gypsum is heavy, it’s not near as heavy as plaster. We have at least 30 bags of plaster out in our garage–we can’t even fill them halfway because of the weight!

After the upstairs rooms are done (and I have to mop them at least 5 more times to get up all the plaster dust) we’re starting on the kitchen. It’s currently not to my taste at all–the single basin sink is a workshop sink–and there’s not enough counter space and too much unused space. We’re planning on making the kitchen a U instead of the current L, with handmade cherry-stained cabinets lining the south and east walls and having a breakfast counter extend from the east along the north side of the kitchen. We’re going to integrate Cassie’s crate into the breakfast bar portion of the structure, so we’ll have to work with her on riding in the car without her crate.

I’m planning on posting photos, but with everything we’ve been doing lately, I haven’t had time to get them uploaded and posted. We’re taking pictures of every step of the remodeling process, so I’ll have plenty of before, during and after photos to share.

Next summer, we’re planning a bathroom renovation. Even though the previous owner just had the bathroom renovated, the setup doesn’t work so well for us. We’re going to make the current two-room bath back into a single room, extending the bathroom about 3 feet toward the dining room to integrate the linen closet into the bathroom. We’re also going to take out a door and wall up the opening to the downstairs room we’re using for the computer room. When we get all this done, I’ll get my sewing/spinning/craft room where the bathtub is currently. Until then, I’ll just have to use the dining room table (which we don’t have yet) for my sewing and crafts. I still have to save for my Kromski Symphony–it’s been placed on a back burner for now until I can pay to have the piano tuned.

When we bought the house, there was a 100+ year old piano–late 19th century–that was left with the house for us. I want to teach my children how to play, but there are several sour notes that I want tuned first. I don’t know if there are going to have to be any repairs, but I want my instrument to sound nice when I sit down to play. I have to purchase some books for the kids and some exercise books for myself so I can get back into practice. I love playing, but I really need to get back into exercises and not just the fun stuff.

Anyway, it’s late and I’m needing to get to bed. We’ve got a full day tomorrow. The piano tuner is coming at 10 to look at the piano and assess the condition and treatment; Del is working on disassembling a wooden platform in our yard–there is at least one woodchuck living under it–and we have to start framing the doors for the closets.

We also have to build the storage and closet space over the stairway, as well as a couple of bookshelves for space dividers. Of course, this isn’t all going to be done tomorrow, but we’ve got a really busy week with remodeling, doctors, and church. Del has to go in Tuesday, so that’s a day that we won’t get too much work done in the house. Cassie has to go to the vet for her rabies and distemper shots on Wednesday, and we only have two days until the weekend to work on the remodeling. Saturday I’m reading at church, so that’ll cut the day short.

Next week is just as bad. My SIL and BIL will be coming into town next week. My nieces and nephew enjoy playing with my kids, so that will be a huge distraction from work. We also have to take Delbert to the dentist–a 2 hour drive away–in Essex Junction on Friday. Sarah, want to meet at Zachary’s for lunch? Saturday, our youngest niece (born July 7) is being baptized, and Sunday we have a birthday party for our 2-year-old niece. We’ll eventually get everything done!!!

Days Inn Complaint
Filing: Uncategorized — CatsCradleCreations @ 5:16 pm

This is the text of a letter I sent to the Days Inn Corporate office. I will send it to the Ohio State Board of Health and the Central Ohio BBB if necessary.

To Corporate Manager:

During a recent trip, we stayed at a Days Inn Hotel in Columbus, Ohio. We have never had any problems with your chain in the past, and we needed a hotel that would allow us to board our puppy with us.

We stayed in Room 185 at the Days Inn-Columbus North, 1212 E Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, Ohio on the night of July 9, 2007 and experienced several disturbing events during our short stay.

First, we found rodent droppings on the front cover of the phone book in our room, indicating the presence of rats and/or mice in the building. When we presented the contaminated phone book to the front desk staff, they simply took the phone book and didn’t ask why we brought it to them or offer a clean book for the room.

Second, and more seriously, we found rodent droppings present in our breakfast cereal. I took the contaminated cereal to the front desk to register a complaint, and the front desk staff just looked at me like there wasn’t an issue. I had to show the rodent droppings present in the bowl of cereal before I was believed in this matter. I was shown to the breakfast lounge—and stayed there for over 20 minutes with no explanations—but nothing was done to resolve the issue of my family’s cereal. The staff merely had the cereal containers emptied, where more droppings were discovered. The problem wasn’t resolved; the real issue most likely lies in the kitchen where the cereals are stored.

Third, the diligence of the front desk staff was extremely lacking. There was an uncouth hotel guest loitering in the breakfast lounge. He told me of his skinny-dipping in the pool the night before—after posted pool hours—in front of my 4-yr-old son. When I returned with the contaminated cereal thirty minutes later, this guest was still in the breakfast lounge and letting his penis and testicles hang out of the leg of his shorts. It was obvious he was doing this intentionally, as his legs were spread open and he kept scratching his crotch area in an attempt to make sure things were seen. He made several other lewd remarks pertaining to lack of underwear and lack of clothing. I found this highly disturbing and very inappropriate for a family atmosphere. Sexual harassment is a serious problem and this incident went apparently unnoticed by the staff who walked into the lounge while this guest was sitting there with his legs open and showing his private parts.

Fourth, the swimming pool was not maintained at a level for safe swimming. I understand the level of work involved in maintaining an outdoor swimming pool, but if a pool is supposed to be opened during certain times of the year, then I expect that it would be clean and safe for use during the posted hours of operation. We were unable to use the pool and this caused great disappointment for our two young children who where traveling with us.

I am very concerned about the sanitary issues found at this location and the seemingly lack of concern by the local management. I am disappointed to find that I was not treated better by the local management when I brought these issues to their attention and I feel that they should be addressed for the safety and well being of future hotel guests.

Sincerely,

Melissa H.

Hopefully, this will get their attention and I won’t have to forward this to the other two agencies. I’m pissed about this shit happening!

Yarnies (3) (popup) | permalink

Next Page »

 Theme ©V4NY.net
